Entrance to Good Shepherd Church

Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces, serve the Church and their neighbour on a voluntary basis in about 170 countries.

Object of the Legion

The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting, where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussion. Persons who wish to join the Legion must apply for membership in a Praesidium. The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of each individual.

Membership and Apostolic Works:

Open to all Catholic men and women. The Junior Praesidium (7-17 years of age), "Mary Mother of the Universe" meets at 6:00 p.m. in the parish meeting room while the Senior praesidium (18 and over), "Our Lady of the Good Shepherd" meets at 7:00 p.m. every Wednesday.

The Legion of Mary came to Good Shepherd Parish in November of 2000.

The Legion began in Dublin Ireland in 1921 and today there are an estimated 2.5 million legionaries in 168 countries in the world. Currently there are 7 active members and 96 auxiliaries, 9 adjutorians and 3 praetorian members. We have 5 active juniors.

The members are involved in many apostolic works within the parish. These activities include nursing and retirement home visitations on a weekly basis, visitations of shut-ins and auxiliary members, Pilgrim Virgin visitation (bringing the image of the Blessed Virgin to homes to encourage praying of the rosary), teaching Baptism classes for the parents and godparents of babies who are to be baptized, assisting with the classes for Reconciliation and First Communion, organizing monthly Patrician Meetings and Book Barrow (Parish Library), Living Rosary, participating in the life of the Parish Community, extension work in other parishes and door to door visitations.
